Launch Event for the STAR-IDAZ International Research Consortium for Animal Health

27th January 2016 @ 12:00 am - 29th March 2024 @ 10:03 am

The official launch of the STAR-IDAZ International Research Consortium for Animal Health (IRC), an exciting initiative to align research programmes around the world to deliver measurable advancements in the control of animal diseases, will be held on 27 January 2016 in Brussels immediately before the conference “Designing the path: a strategic approach to EU agricultural research & innovation”.  Speaking at this event will be Phil Hogan, European Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development, Monique Eloit, Director General, World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE), and Professor Ian Boyd, Chief Scientific Adviser for the UK Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra). Attendance at the event will be by invitation only for those organisations that have signed the Letter of Intent to participate in the IRC.

STAR-IDAZ was an FP7-funded Coordination and Support Action (CSA) concerned with coordination of research on infectious diseases of animals and zoonoses. Partners in the project were research funding bodies and programme managers. The CSA came to an end in January 2015 but STAR-IDAZ continues on as a sustainable network operating under a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).

There was enthusiasm amongst STAR-IDAZ members to take animal disease research coordination to another level and align their research programmes to deliver, for at least 30 priority diseases and crosscutting issues, candidate vaccines, diagnostics, therapeutics and other animal health products, procedures and key scientific information/tools to support risk analysis and disease control. STAR-IDAZ members involved in this higher level of coordination form the Executive Committee of the STAR-IDAZ IRC.

For further information on how the IRC will operate please download the IRC Governance Structure and Modus Operandi. The Letter of Intent and IRC Policies and Guidelines are available from this website under Resources > International Research Consortium (IRC) and the STAR-IDAZ Memorandum of Understanding is available from this website under Resources > Other Resources. Any organisations interested in joining the IRC should contact the STAR-IDAZ Project Manager, Luke Dalton at Luke.Dalton@Defra.gsi.gov.uk.
