STAR IDAZ Approach

Animal genomics and genetics is a cross-cutting STAR IDAZ IRC priority with the potential to improve animal health through greater disease resistance and resilience, improved genomic prediction and the development of new tools for disease prevention and control. STAR IDAZ monitors developments across the field, including advances in functional genomics, phenotyping, genomic selection and gene editing, and considers their relevance across its wider animal health priorities. In the absence of a dedicated active working group, current activity focuses on horizon scanning, research mapping and identifying opportunities for coordination across the STAR IDAZ network.

Research roadmaps and gap analyses

Gap analysis summary

A dedicated STAR IDAZ research roadmap for Animal Genomics/Genetics has not yet been developed. Areas of continuing relevance include improved phenotyping for animal health and disease-resilience traits; genomic prediction and selection for disease resistance and resilience; functional annotation linking genetic variation to biological mechanisms; maintaining genetic diversity within livestock populations; and responsible application of emerging genomic technologies, including gene editing. These areas will inform future priority-setting and could provide the basis for a formal gap analysis or research roadmap if activity in this area is expanded.
