New CBPP Vaccine Development Roadmap Published

STAR IDAZ International Research Consortium has published a new roadmap for the development of vaccines against contagious bovine pleuropneumonia (CBPP), now available on the STAR IDAZ website under the Mycoplasmas priority topic.

CBPP, caused by Mycoplasma mycoides subsp. mycoides (Mmm), remains one of the most serious cattle diseases in sub-Saharan Africa, affecting more than 20 countries. Efforts to control the disease have faced major challenges in recent years, compounded by the reduction in surveillance and vaccination activities in many countries following the COVID-19 pandemic.

To address these challenges, an international workshop was held from 26–28 June 2023, funded by USDA-ARS, to identify critical research gaps needed to improve CBPP control and support eventual eradication.

The Vaccine and Therapeutics session highlighted several priority areas, including the development of safer and more effective next-generation vaccines with longer-lasting immunity and DIVA compatibility, improvements to the current T1/44 vaccine through new protocols and adjuvants, and research into the combined use of antibiotics and vaccination while monitoring antimicrobial resistance.

Following the workshop, it was agreed that the CBPP vaccine development roadmap would become the first roadmap developed under the STAR IDAZ Mycoplasmas priority topic.

The roadmap has now been reviewed by the STAR IDAZ Scientific Committee and is available on the STAR IDAZ website: https://www.star-idaz.net/roadmap/research-roadmap-for-contagious-bovine-pleuropneumonia-cbpp-vaccine-development/
