Bridging the One Health Funding Gap: Strategic Mechanisms for Integrated Research Coordination

STAR IDAZ IRC has carried out activity to identify approaches to improve strategic mechanisms for funding research with an integrated One Health approach. A position paper was published on Why One Health Matters for Animal Health (2025), discussing the added value of a One Health approach to animal health research. Work to understand the current global funding landscape for One Health research and the available mechanism resulted in two key reports: Mapping One Health: An Exploration of the Global Funding Landscape for One Health Research (2024) and Investing in Research with a One Health Approach (2025). Through a multidisciplinary, participatory approach, the Working Group identified key challenges for funding research with a One Health approach and co-developed practical solutions to address them. These are laid out in the One Health Funding Workshop Report (2025).

More recently, STAR IDAZ International Research Consortium on Animal Health has presented this work at two regional One Health Symposiums – UK-Brazil One Health Symposium (Basilia, November 2025) and One Health Expert Symposium (Brussels, March 2026).

During the Brasilia Symposium, our Secretariat Lead, Madeline Newman, presented the findings of the One Health Working Group to improve mechanisms for funding research with a One Health approach and discussed the need for better coordination of animal health research internationally. In Brussels, Madeline spoke about how large-scale research consortia can accelerate innovation across the sectors and facilitate research with a One Health approach, along with representatives of European Partnership on One Health Antimicrobial Resistance and the European One Health Association. 

STAR IDAZ IRC and this work has directly contributed to the One Health Hub’s One Health Research Roadmap 2025-2030, which explores the evolution of One Health research, current knowledge gaps, and future research priorities.
