STAR IDAZ Publishes Brucellosis Vaccine Workshop Report Highlighting Global Research Priorities

The STAR IDAZ International Research Consortium (IRC) has released the Brucellosis Vaccine Workshop Report, capturing key outcomes from the expert meeting held on 3 November in Costa Rica. The workshop brought together specialists from more than 18 institutions across 12+ countries, representing academia, WOAH reference centres, national governments, and major international research programmes.

Brucellosis remains one of the most consequential zoonotic diseases worldwide, affecting livestock productivity, rural livelihoods, trade, and human health. While vaccines exist, major scientific and practical limitations continue to hinder effective control—particularly in endemic regions with diverse epidemiological and socioeconomic contexts.

Report Highlights

The newly published report outlines several important findings, including:

  •  Key research gaps and vaccine priorities—from safety and species specificity to improved stability and efficacy.
  •  Needs and challenges in affected countries, particularly around surveillance capacity, vaccine deployment, and resource limitations.
  • Opportunities to improve and modernise current vaccines, including potential technological innovations and updated regulatory pathways.
  • Recommendations feeding into the update of the Brucellosis Vaccine Research Roadmap, helping guide coordinated international research efforts.

Driving Global Collaboration for Better Vaccines

The insights generated during the workshop reinforce the need for sustained global cooperation to accelerate the development of safer, more effective, and context-appropriate brucellosis vaccines. By aligning priorities and sharing expertise, STAR IDAZ aims to catalyse progress toward improved tools that can reduce the burden of this disease worldwide.
