STAR IDAZ–UK-ICN Research Roadmaps Aim to Strengthen Coronavirus Preparedness

The STAR IDAZ International Research Consortium (IRC), in collaboration with the UK International Coronavirus Network (UK-ICN), has published a series of targeted research roadmaps on coronaviruses. These roadmaps identify critical research priorities to accelerate the development of effective coronavirus control methods—supporting both human and animal health.

The initiative produced three focused roadmaps addressing:

  1. Disease control strategies
  2. Diagnostic test development
  3. Candidate vaccine development

Key research gaps identified include:

  • Understanding the socio-economic and environmental drivers of disease emergence
  • Effects of climate change and wildlife trade on spillover risk
  • Development of pan-coronavirus detection assays
  • Creation of species-independent serological platforms
  • Enhancing the affordability, delivery, and long-term efficacy of next-generation vaccines

By providing these roadmaps, STAR IDAZ and UK-ICN aim to align global research efforts and funding with the most pressing scientific needs, fostering stronger pandemic preparedness across sectors.
