WHO Launches Course on Dual-Use Research and Responsible Use of the Life Sciences
The World Health Organization (WHO) has introduced a new course aimed at enhancing global awareness and understanding of dual-use research (DUR) and its implications within the life sciences. The course, titled Dual-Use Research and the Responsible Use of the Life Sciences, is structured into eight comprehensive modules designed to address the identification and mitigation of biorisks while promoting the safe, secure, and responsible use of biological materials and technologies.
The curriculum covers key concepts such as dual-use research of concern (DURC), the responsible use of life sciences (RULS), and effective strategies to mitigate biorisks. Participants will explore the framework established by the WHO in 2022 – WHO Global Guidance Framework for the Responsible Use of the Life Sciences, which emphasizes multi-sectoral cooperation across the One Health spectrum.
Targeted at researchers, policymakers, funding bodies, and stakeholders within the global life sciences community, the course aims to equip participants with the knowledge to identify, anticipate, and govern dual-use risks that threaten humans, animals, plants, and the environment. Case studies and interactive questions allow learners to apply the concepts in real-world scenarios, enhancing practical understanding.
Upon completion of the three-hour course, participants receive a Confirmation of Participation, acknowledging their commitment to fostering a culture of safety and responsibility in life sciences research.
