My research focuses on the development of vaccines for Southern Africa. I have built up expertise on the development of vaccines for HIV and other diseases of humans and animals such as COVID-19, East Coast fever, bovine coronavirus, lumpy skin disease and foot and mouth disease. Our team has used DNA, mRNA, poxvirus, protein subunit and nanoparticle platforms to develop these vaccines. We have also set up a SARS-CoV-2 hamster challenge model at the University of Cape Town and a rhesus macaque SHIV challenge model.
