Phagentherapie – Application of bacteriophages in the therapy of Staphylococcus aureus mastitis.

Summary

The aim of the project is the practical evaluation of a novel treatment technique for mastitis using phages. The use of a specific phage combination is intended to reduce antibiotic treatment in the presence of udder infections caused by Staphylococcus (S.) aureus and to improve the bacteriological cure rate of such infections. The use of phages as a substitute for antibiotic treatment serves to conserve resources by avoiding antibiotic residues in milk as a foodstuff and reducing milk losses by eliminating withdrawal periods. In addition, further development and spread of antibiotic resistance in S. aureus is counteracted.
