Summary

The STAR IDAZ IRC convened a One Health funding workshop on 12–13 March 2025 at the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) in Nairobi, Kenya. The workshop brought together over 40 participants from across sectors, disciplines, and regions — including funders, researchers, government agencies, and international organisations — to identify key challenges in funding research with a One Health approach and collaboratively develop practical solutions.

Key highlights:

  • 13 major challenges identified, including inequity and exclusion, siloed governance, funding model limitations, and lack of sustainability.
  • Co-developed solutions to each challenge, with actionable recommendations for funders, programme owners, researchers, and practitioners.
  • Emphasis on longer funding timeframes, flexibility, co-creation of research, improved communication, and sustainable collaboration.

The report offers strategic guidance to enhance integration of One Health into research funding and implementation, aiming to improve health outcomes across human, animal, and environmental sectors.
