Leading a semi-retired life, Vish is a member of the Network Management Board of the International Veterinary Vaccinology Network (IVVN) and Chair of the Scientific Committee of STAR-IDAZ International Research Consortium on Animal Health. He is an Emeritus Fellow of the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) and Adjunct Faculty at the Paul G. Allen School for Global Health, Washington State University, USA. Born in Kenya and following in-country early schooling, he obtained degrees and post-doctoral training at three universities in the UK. He joined the predecessor of ILRI in 1986 in Nairobi, Kenya, and left in 2001 to work in the field of genomics in three research institutions in the USA. He returned to ILRI Kenya in 2009 until retirement in 2023. Vish maintains interest in a broad range of research topics that converge on control of infectious diseases and in the use of whole genome sequence-based technologies to underpin research. A major area of focus was in the area of ticks and tick-borne diseases that affect livestock, with an emphasis on Theileria parva, an apicomplexan organism, which usually causes a fatal disease in cattle called East Coast fever.
